A GROUP of Leominster councillors went to Ledbury on 'grave business', writes PETE BLENCH.

Their destination was the town's cemetery. They were very impressed.

Leominster Town Council is thinking of striking a blow for independence by offering to take over management of its own Hereford Road cemetery from the county.

Councillors were keen to see how Ledbury runs its own graveyard.

It was very well kept, reported Leominster deputy mayor Roger Hunt.

"And burial charges are much cheaper in Ledbury," added councillor John Thomas.

The council heard that its Ledbury counterpart also had more staff and bigger offices.

Councillor June French gave a warning over unseen costs of the burial business.

She said: "We need to be conscious of Leominster taxpayers and losing the economy of scale we get with Herefordshire Council. We need to go into this with our eyes wide open."

The council agreed to continue fact-finding .
