SHOW AND CARNIVAL -- Meeting for the first time since the show, the show and carnival committee reviewed a successful event and considered ways of making the 2002 event, which will be on Saturday, August 31, even more successful. Because of foot-and-mouth disease restrictions, there were no livestock and equine sections, but these will, hopefully, be back next year. The horticultural, floral and handicrafts section, held in the community centre, was particularly successful, with around 1,000 entries. The parade of vintage vehicles, a first for this year, was also much appreciated.
Everyone was impressed by the way in which the Carnival Princess's float had been decorated and the committee recorded its thanks to Clynderwen and Cardiganshire Farmers Ltd for the loan of its lorry, to Ray Gould for driving the float, and to Alan Farmer for his help to set it up. Both mid-day and evening processions were outstanding successes and the committee thanks everyone who supported them by taking part and through sponsorship.
The barn dance at Caine's Warehouse raised around £750 and the show night dance at the community centre about £2,200. The treasurer emphasised the importance of these dances, and the others held throughout the year, to the show's finances.
ANNUAL MEETING -- The annual meeting of Knighton Show and Carnival will be at the RAFA Club, High Street, on Thursday, November 15, at 8pm. The planning for next year's event is under way and the committee welcomes new members and new ideas, particularly suggestions on events for the main arena on show day.
DISABLED PARKING -- Knighton Town Council has agreed to support a proposal from Powys Highways, Transport and Properties Department that a disabled parking bay be implemented outside the Post Office in Broad Street. The county council will have to go through a legal process, which includes consultation with interested bodies before the scheme can be implemented.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS -- Knighton Town Council has agreed to an expenditure of £1,235 on the display of Christmas lights, which was £235 more than the sum estimated. The largest part of this amount was on festoon cabling which needed to be replaced. Councillor Sarah Scotford said it was unsatisfactory that the lights ended at the top of High Street. She wanted them extended along Market Street as far as The Plough.
DONATIONS -- On a majority decision, Knighton Town Council gave Radnorshire and North Brecknock Carers Centre a donation of £50. Some councillors were against the decision as they felt the town council's donations should go to organisations that were actively involved in the town. The council agreed to a £100 donation to Childline.

EVENTS -- Lingen Community Hall lists an enviable choice of events and activities. Though comparatively small in numbers, the villagers make the most of their well-designed new building. Their fourth annual art and craft exhibition and sale at the end of August gathered a remarkably large number of paintings and craft work by amateurs and professionals from the Border area and as far as the Midlands. This fine exhibition was shown to best advantage against the Hall's screens, which have been specifically designed for the purpose. Lingen's interest in art continues year round, and Lingen painters meet on Monday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm with a tutor, who will help members to choose their own subjects and medium and will demonstrate different techniques. Though the classes started on September 10, the organiser Pam Rosser can provide details to inquirers on 01544 267610.
New members and visitors are always welcome at Lingen Gardening Club's meetings, held monthly at 7.30pm. Alan Cook speaks on alpines of the world on October 16, and Audrey Ashwell on rockery plants on November 20. Inquiries to John on 267828 or Dorothy on 267990.
Lingen Resource Centre in the hall is run by volunteers 'from the community for the community', and offers computer training classes and other IT and word processing services. It is open from 10am to 12 noon on Mondays and Thursdays and can be accessed at other times by arrangement. More than 400 Learndirect courses are available in the resource centre, with five weekly sessions to choose from. These are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a choice of times: Contact Niki Davies on 260516.
The hall houses the Post Office on Monday and Thursdays from 9am to 12.30 pm, which offers a full range of money facilities, as well as selling stamps and paying out pensions. Telephone during opening hours is 01544 260516.
