NEW arable grants available to farmers through the Countryside Stewardship Scheme were outlined by Andrew Sherrott of DEFRA at a meeting held by Herefordshire FWAG at the New Inn, Pembridge.
Mr Sherrott said the new grants included payments for retaining stubbles over the winter, for reducing the use of pesticides and fertilisers on crop headlands, for sowing wild bird mix and for leaving land fallow over the summer to create nesting opportunities for lapwings. FWAG will hold a farm walk at Devereux Wootton, near Weobley, on November 22 when Mr Sherrott will be looking at the practical application of the scheme.

A second evening meeting to explain the scheme will be held at the Bay Horse, Bromyard, on November 27.
For more information on the meeting, ring Michael Bentley of FWAG on 01432 356872.
