Bishops Frome cider makers, Mike Henney and Beth Leadbetter of Cheyney Lodge Cider Company have won the annual Flavours of Herefordshire Food Producers Award.

The award recognises the quality of the product, its prominent links with Herefordshire and the way the produce is marketed locally and nationally.

Frome Valley is a sparkling dry cider which Mike and Beth market through local off-licences and pubs, and has just reached the shelves of Tesco in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

To create a table wine-type cider, they also blend the Bramley cooking apple with a cider apple variety, Dabinett.

The apples are sourced locally between September to December, when the crop is harvested from the Herefordshire orchards.

Flavours of Herefordshire, now in its third year, is an award scheme made up of several categories that aims to encourage catering outlets and food shops to source their supplies locally wherever possible.

Sponsored by Herefordshire Council and Heart of England fine foods (HEFF), the awards seek to persuade restaurateurs to conserve authentic traditional recipes, while developing new dishes based on local foods and flavours.
