NEW land is being acquired to expand Bromyard's cemetery off Church Street.
Jonathan Lester, chairman of Bromyard joint burial committee, said it was in the process of buying a quarter acre piece of land from Herefordshire Council for £1.
He said: "We are being sensible in realising that eventually the cemetery will fill up and so we are buying a bit of land which will last us for a good few years until we can think of buying a brand new site.
"At the moment we are waiting for landscaping and planning applications for change of use, and are registering the site with land registry.
"We hope by the end of this year to have it all finalised, and then we will get quotes in to get the area landscaped. It's overgrown so we will have to clear and level it and tidy it up."
The costs of the work will be met by Bromyard burial committee, whose funds come from Bromyard and Winslow Town Council and the Parish Council of Brockhampton.
