Hereford'S Littlewoods store is to undergo a £1 million makeover to provide a little bit 'extra' for city shoppers, writes JONATHAN LAND.
Under plans announced this week the High Street premises will become the new home of Index, currently based in the Maylord Centre, and will feature Internet and mail order shopping services for the first time.
The store, which is to be re-branded as 'Littlewoods Extra', will also receive a major facelift with improved changing and disabled facilities promised.
Work on the new-look Littlewoods is already underway with an official opening planned for Thursday November 8.
Jobs secure
The city's existing Index store will remain open until after Christmas but will be vacated soon afterwards.
No job losses are expected.
Littlewoods arrival in Hereford back in 1967 caused quite a stir at the time when the black-and-white timber-framed Merchant's House was incorporated into the store.
In a major operation witnessed by hundreds of astonished onlookers, the 17th century building was moved 100-yards across High Town on a massive chassis with four sets of double wheels at the corners and slotted into place.
