A COUPLE who saw the launch of their dream - a unique style of equestrian centre - ruined by foot and mouth are planning to celebrate the return of better times by throwing open their farm for a charity fun day.
Horses will be allowed in free and humans will pay £7 (to include a taste of Andrew's acclaimed home made cakes) at Bridget and Andrew Batchelor's centre at High View Farm, near Aymestrey.
Charities benefiting from the Sunday, September 23, event are Leominster branch of Riding for the Disabled, Herefordshire Horsewatch and the International League for the Protection of Horses (which has a rescue centre at Hoarwithy).
Bridget and Andrew, who took over the farm in February last year, worked hard for more than a year to prepare for the April 2001 opening of their centre, which includes a 'Horses' Playground.' But the launch had to be put on hold.
Like many others, the couple found the year went pear-shaped because of foot and mouth restrictions. The county's last FMD case back in the spring was at nearby Wigmore.
"We have had to pretty well write-off our first season," said Bridget.
"We are not alone. A lot of people have had a grisly summer, the horses with their shoes off and everyone getting bored silly.
"But now it is time for some fun."
She promises that everyone attending the event will have a chance to be involved in a series of games whether mounted, dismounted or horse-less!
l Anyone planning to attend the event should contact Bridget and Andrew Batchelor for directions on 01568 770443.
