IT was a case of 'lights, camera, action' for Only Fools and Horses actor John Challis when he paid a visit to Hereford Record Office.

The actor, who plays car dealer Boycie in the hit TV series, was accompanied by the BBC's 'House Detectives' team as they delved into the history of John's famous Herefordshire home, Wigmore Abbey.

The team had already done some filming at Wigmore before arriving at the Record Office in Harold Street, which holds records of the Abbey dating back to the 12th century.

And the Bishop's Register of 1322, also kept at the office, gives a fascinating insight into the political and religious goings on in Wigmore and further afield around this time.

Under the expert eye of 'House Detectives' presenter Carenza Lewis, John was told of the discussion that would have taken place in his house during the 14th century which were connected with the creation of the Abbot of Wigmore.

The Bishop's records refer to Roger of Mortimer, Lord of Wigmore, and his connection with the ousting of one Abbot for another when standards at the Abbey fell.

"Roger obviously wanted his Abbey to be a shining example of what an abbey should be," explained John.

Sue Hubbard, manager of Hereford Record Office, said: "We're pleased to be able to help such a VIP visitor to the office although we don't usually do our work under the glare of spotlights and TV cameras."

The Wigmore Abbey edition of 'House Detectives' is due to be screened by the BBC next spring.
