THE Broadheath harness racing fixture under BHRC rules, which was forced to relocate to the Almeley circuit due to foot and mouth restrictions, boasted a fast and furious 12-race card.
Hundred House trainer Graham Hammonds celebrated a double success when his home-bred duo, Danny The Rhiew and Kerry Rhiew, scorched clear in their respective events, both capably partnered by Rhayader driver Andrew Rees. Hammonds is a founder member of Wales & West HRA, as is Cinderford owner Jimmy Hamblett who enjoyed seeing his impressive mare, Inez Gale, record her fourth success of 2001 with David Bevan.
Terry Laventure had some overdue good luck when picking up a couple of 'catch drives' and winning with both. He sprinted to a surprise victory with Bruce Williams' Look Sharp and Roy Willis' raiding Maverick.
Glyn Slade-Jones, a busy member of the promoting committee, took time off from his duties to enjoy an all-the-way triumph with Sourbrook Celia for his father Tom, who is also one of the organisers.
The eye-catching Blue Rajah is becoming something of a stamina specialist, and was masterfully produced by 17-year-old Dale Wilson to take his second mile-and-a half race of the season.
Other popular victories were Dave Shellam's Leckwith Spirit (Colin Bevan), who returned from injury to win a division of the maiden, and Cliff Beaumont-Dowse's stalwart, Billy Baron, who powered home gamely in an open handicap heat
Other heats were won by Northern Lola (Sara Mould), Kerry Rhiew (Andrew Rees) and the impressive raider, Pantri Bach Dancer (Joss Edwards), but none of them had the answer to the devastating burst of late speed shown by Denzil Benberthy in the final.
Having just been pipped in his heat, Denzil Benberthy was galvanised by Carl Davies to make a turbo-charged challenge up the run-in to steal the glory and record his third victory in as many weeks.
Next Fixture: Sunday, Almeley, 2 pm.
