HEREFORDSHIRE County Cricket Club will be looking to West Indian batsman Lincoln Roberts to help them reach the third round of the C and G Trophy with a victory over Suffolk at Bury St Edmunds today.
Herefordshire have already played in the competition this season, beating Gloucestershire Board and Middlesex before bowing out to Worcestershire in the fourth round at New Road. Under restructuring, however, the minor teams will play the first two rounds of the Trophy the year before the first class counties enter the competition's third round.
Herefordshire recruited Andre Adams, the New Zealand one-day international for their C & G matches earlier in the season. But the wrist injury that prevented him from playing against Worcestershire meant he made an early return to his home country.
Consequently, Herefordshire have signed 27-year-old Roberts, who made a Test match appearance for the West Indies against Australia in Jamaica in 1998. He plays for Trinidad and Tobago and during this summer has turned out for Himley in the Birmingham League.
It is the first time that Herefordshire, who play in the Minor Counties Championship Western Section, have taken on an Eastern Division club away from home. Herefordshire had a first round bye, while Suffolk defeated Denmark.
The county club held their annual presentation of awards evening at the Talbot Hotel, Leominster last Friday. Trophy winners were: batting Chris Boroughs, bowling Kevin Cooper, fielding Nathan Round, young player of the year Ravi Nagra, players' player of the year Rob Hughes.
