Leominster Ladies A team has made Herefordshire history by winning the Herefordshire and Worcestershire County League Championships for the first time since the counties amalgamated in 1976.
Ever since 1976 when it was decided that Herefordshire LTA would amalgamate with Worcestershire LTA and form one association called the Herefordshire and Worcestershire LTA, Worcestershire teams have dominated both the winter and summer leagues at the top of Group 1.
Leominster Ladies team have been in Group One for about six years now and have always been in about 3rd or 4th place behind clubs such as Barnt Green and Stourbridge. This year their team of six won the Slazenger Winter League and two weeks ago beat Stourbridge B, 6 rubbers - 0 to win Group One of the Slazenger Summer League.
The team also came fourth in the Regional National Club League, which was a great achievement.
Team captain, Jenny Ellerton, was delighted by their result and put it down to a good team spirit and enjoyment of the game as the reasons for their success. Jackie Burton and Helen White, their first pair, have not lost a rubber this year. Jackie from Ross-on-Wye plays for the county over 35s team and Helen, a teacher from Presteigne, was a Lincolnshire county player before moving to Powys. Sarah Snell, Glynne Hall and Jenny Ellerton have all played for the county at various times and Megan Knipe, the youngest member of the team at 14 years old, has just won the Junior County U16 singles title at Malvern last week.
