THE only sensible solution for a new library in Hereford is to put it on part of the car park in Gaol Street.
This claim is made in the newsletter of Hereford Civic Trust in an article by John Rogers and David Whitehead who say it is the choice of the Hereford Library Users Group.
The Group want a purpose built landmark building in Hereford of which people could be proud.
In short, no existing building will do, say Mr Rogers and Mr Whitehead.
"Nor will any scheme cobbled together to provide enlargements on existing sites where the property as never been designed for library purposes.
"The council's selection of Kemble Houses is unsuitable as it will require extensive enlargement and strengthening.' The property also belongs to a commercial company. The Hereford Library Users Group is opposed to the choice of this site,'' says the article.
In plumping for Gaol Street the authors point out the council owns the site, no purchase was necessary and it made possible a purpose-built structure at a realistic price.
Additional benefits would flow from the development of the site, using the library as a landmark building and there would be room to retain some car parking.
