EXAMINATION SUCCESSES -- In the recent piano examination of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, the following candidates were successful: Kacie Lloyd (grade 4), Amy Beavan (grade 2), Charles Brisbane (grade 1, distinction), Guy Rochefort (grade 1, merit), Holly Middleton (grade 1). All are pupils of Jane Milward, of Knighton.

WOMEN'S INSTITUTE -- Mrs Joan Beattie, president of Tref-y-Clawdd Women's Institute, congratulated members on achieving third place in the annual competition for WI's at Knighton Show.Members made arrangements for attendance at Pathway days on October 29 and 30. Olive Waters volunteered to represent Tref-y-Clawdd at the council meeting on September 21, and four members volunteered to compete in the quiz on September 21.A coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Relief from 10am to 12noon at Victoria Close on Friday, September 28, was announced. Speaker David Bennett gave an informative and interesting account of first aid treatment. He was thanked by Betty Richards.Raffle winners were Ada Glass, Freda Evans and Hilda Mosler.

Competition winner for the best list of contents for a first aid kit was Pauline Parker. The next meeting of Tref-y-Clawdd Women's Institute will be on October 3, when J Ames will speak on Romania. The competition will be for the best item to send to Romania.

BRASS BANDS -- Knighton Festival of Brass Bands' next concert will be on Saturday, September 29, at 7.30pm at the Community Centre, Knighton, with the Williams Fairey Band.Tickets, £5 for adults and £1 for under 16s, are available in Knighton at The Bookshop, Offa's Dyke centre, or by telephone on 01547 528087.

ST EDWARD'S CHURCH -- The Very Rev. Geraint Hughes, former Dean of Brecon and Rector of Llandrindod Wells, presided at last Sunday's celebration of the Eucharist at St Edward's Church. "We must be constantly aware of our dependence on God and give up any sense of dependence on the things of this world," said Mr Hughes in his sermon.

GROUP OF PARISHES -- Services this Sunday in the Knighton Group of Parishes are: 8am Eucharist at Knighton, 9.30am Battle of Britain Service at Knighton, 9.30am Morning Prayer at Whitton, 11am Eucharist at Norton, and 3pm Eucharist at Cascob.

METHODIST CHURCH -- The Rev. Michael Langstaff, Superintendent Minister of the Knighton and Leintwardine Methodist Circuit, will take a family service at 11am this Sunday at Knighton Methodist Church.

The Harvest Festival will be at 11am on Sunday, October 7, and will be taken by the Rev. Michael Langstaff.

COMMUNITY CENTRE -- The management committee of Knighton Community Centre will increase all hiring charges at the centre by five per cent from January 1, 2002. The cost of hiring the centre for a wedding will increase to £140. "We regret having to increase charges," said Kevin Kell, secretary to the community centre management committee, "but there has not been a general increase for some years. Cost are increasing all the time, and we will shortly be taking on responsibility for the maintenance of the whole of the centre. At the moment we are responsible for just the interior. We are looking at ways of increasing the use of the centre, but we cannot avoid this relatively modest increase if the Centre is to remain viable financially."

ELECTED -- Knighton and Presteigne Labour Party met recently and Kevin Kell, Rob Reeves, Frank Hooley and Eva Goldsworthy were elected to serve as Knighton and Presteigne representatives on the Brecon and Radnor Constituency general committee.

CLUB OUTING -- Knighton and District Wednesday Club is having an outing to Barmouth and Dolgellau on Wednesday, September 19, starting from Bowling Green Lane at 9am. The fare to non members is £5.50p, and those interested should telephone Winnie Davies on 01547 528305 by tomorrow.
