ADULT EDUCATION -- Monica Joseph, adult education warden for Presteigne and Knighton, has announced a comprehensive range of subjects for the coming adult education term, to be held mainly at John Beddoes School. They include the ever popular classes in Welsh, woodwork and computing (Maureen Bengree Jones), and yoga, but several new options are also sure to attract members. Roger Kite will teach the philosophy of art, there is a class on bridge for all, on lines developed by the English Bridge Union, and June Lewis will introduce beginners to painting on silk. Alternative therapies, with a 10-week class by Liz Pinches on reflexology and a five-week course on Alexander Technique by Briar Ridley.
Several classes will be held at other venues, such as upholstery in the Youth Centre, Spanish conversation at Knighton School, painting and drawing in the Offa's Dyke Centre, painting and sketching at New Radnor village hall, and a yoga class at Knucklas Community Hall. All classes start during the week beginning September 17.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT -- Jean Millichamp, who has been Presteigne's community support officer for the past six years, has announced her resignation, to take effect at the end of September. Trustees secretary Annie Nethercott said: "We are very sorry to lose Jean, who has done a marvellous job. She has been very generous in the way she has given time to people who came to her with problems, and in selecting volunteers who could help them out. She has been a real friend to many."
The annual meeting of Presteigne Community Support is due to take place on Wednesday, September 26, at 7.30pm at the Radnorshire Arms Hotel. At this meeting a presentation will be made to Jean Millichamp on behalf of all those who have appreciated her dedicated service in the local community since 1995. Donations are invited and can be sent to Annie Nethercott, Upper House, Discoed, or left with Country Style, High Street, Presteigne (opposite PO).
TRANSPORT WORKER -- The trustees of Presteigne Community Support have appointed Dick Chaplin, a former police sergeant, as transport worker at the community support office, with effect from September 5. He will be in the Hereford Street office on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, from 9am until 2pm, and will deal with all requests for essential journeys. These would include medical and hospital appointments and visits, and the taxi card scheme for disabled and infirm people. The community support office telephone is 01544 267961.
RUSSIAN FUND-RAISER -- To raise funds for the charitable work of RusEDUCAID, a buffet supper and sale will be held at Norton Manor Hotel on Saturday at 7.30pm. The charity enables promising students without means, to spend a year or two at college in the UK so as to ensure they can find secure employment when they return to Russia. Among the stalls at this event will be one displaying a selection of Russian handicrafts, all at reasonable prices. Details from Norton Manor (260536) or Margaret Galliers (267245).
PRESTEIGNE COLTS -- Aspiring young footballers aged nine years and upwards, both boys and girls, who would like to join Presteigne Colts should come along without delay to the East Radnor Leisure Centre to register. Practice starts at 10am each Saturday, starting on September 15.
BROWNIE GUIDES -- The active 2nd Presteigne Brownie Guides start their autumn meetings, which are held on Wednesdays from 5.45pm until 7.15pm at the youth centre. For details contact Kitty Bradley on 267059. The window of the community development office is displaying posters made by the Brownies for the Keep Wales Tidy Campaign.
CARE ASSISTANTS -- Social Services Department of Powys County Council is always looking for more care assistants in the Presteigne and Knighton area, and Sally Lingwood, domiciliary care manager (01597 827102), would be pleased to hear from anyone who is interested. It can be a very rewarding job for those with the right attitude, and having a car and telephone. The rates of pay are good and there is a mileage allowance also.
