Bromyard Town Football Club has applied for planning permission to build a 120-seater spectator stand to help move them up into the West Midlands Regional Premier League.

After coming top in division one south last season the club won the right to enter the premier division but before it can be accepted the club needs to bring its ground up to scratch.

Player and press officer Martin Corbett said the work was likely to cost in the region of £12,000.

"The basic work on erecting the steel stand is likely to cost an initial £7,000 and then the seating and the concrete surfaces we were thinking of doing ourselves, getting hold of second-hand seats from other teams and things like that," he said.

"Most clubs like ours look for funding for these sorts of things and there are various footy grants available.

"We put up floodlights last year but we couldn't get a Lottery grant for those but the Football Association give interest free loans or a 50/50 grant because what we're doing is improving football, not just for ourselves but for everyone," he said.

Bromyard Football Club has been going for 50 years and joined the West Midlands Regional league eight years ago but this will be their first venture into the premier division.

"Whether we can maintain this standard in the next league up I don't know" said Mr Corbett.

"The players will want paying more for a start which is a big stumbling block.

"Ledbury Town were in this league once but run into financial difficulties and went virtually bankrupt so we've got to be careful and we can learn from them," he said.

The club needs to show the league it is committed to improving the ground by the start of the next season in August.

A decision on the club's planing application is due within the next eight weeks.
