AN Asda superstore could be coming to Hereford.

Active discussions are taking place to build the store on part of the old Causeway Farm, which later became Wyelands Caravan Park, now closed.

Owners of the land are Eign Enterprises Ltd, the company behind the Left Bank Village complex.

Managing director Anthony Davies has confirmed the superstore deal as an option.

"We are in discussion with Asda in an endeavour to secure the redevelopment of the Causeway Farm site as a whole," he said.

"We are anxious to meet the community's aspirations with regard to the South Wye regeneration and are working on a scheme which will meet these criteria, while providing the necessary private funding to enable the project to go ahead.

"We will be meeting councillors to discuss our initial ideas in the near future and, once we have had the chance to take on board their comments, we will be submitting a formal planning application and releasing full details of the scheme.'"

Mr Davies said Eign Enterprises owned 11 acres of the site but his company would like to see the whole area, including council-owned land and that in the ownership of Bass Taverns, developed as one project.

Eign Enterprises, he said, had worked with the South Wye Regeneration Bid and wanted to provide what would be best for the local community.

Further details of the Asda scheme, including issues of access and location, are to be outlined at a later date.

The company is understood to want a mixed development, including other retail outlets, housing and community facilities.

The company has confirmed that it sees Causeway Farm as a 'key location' for mixed-use development.

Asda spokesperson Naomi Duggan said: "We are working in partnership with a developer and landowners, Eign Enterprises, to draw up a scheme which not only provides a new store and hundreds of new local jobs, but fully takes into account the aspirations of the community and Eign Enterprises in terms of other uses on the site.

"We are delighted to be associated with this exciting scheme which will act as a catalyst for the further regeneration of South Wye.''
