Westfields 3 Cheltenham Saracens 1

WESTFIELDS completed a gruelling season with victory in the final of the Robert Biggart Memorial Trophy at Bredon.

The city side, who play their football in the Premier Division of the Banks's Brewery West Midlands League, overpowered their opposition from Hellenic League Division 1.

Westfields got to grips with a tricky and uneven surface faster than Cheltenham and had the better of the territorial play early on, but were kept at bay by Saracens' defence.

However, a slick move allowed Darren Hall to break the deadlock when he found himself well placed and his left-foot drive left Cheltenham keeper Lee Yeates clutching at air.

Tight marking foiled efforts to extend their lead and Saracens drew level before half-time when a low shot through a cluster of players left Fields keeper Jon Pugh unsighted.

In the second half Westfields began to dominate, while fine work and distribution in defence from Dave Howes and Keith Hobby prevented any Chelten-ham threat.

Darren Gwilliam ensured that the city side regained the advantage with a shot from the edge of the area into the corner of the net and they went 3-1 ahead soon afterwards.

Some excellent footwork from Darryl Addis allowed him to notch his side's third, before Derek Craddock was felled in the area and Matt Phillips had his penalty palmed away by Yeates.

And Pugh pulled off the save of the match to deny Saracens a closer scoreline when he turned a close-range effort over the bar.

Westfields were this week playing more relaxed football on a tour of Belgium.
