JENNY Spencer, a member of the Hereford Kayak Club, completed a superb gold medal double for the Great Britain junior sprint squad when she won both the 500 and 1,000 metre junior ladies' K1 races at the Bosbhaan International Regatta in Amsterdam, Holland.
She led from start to finish in the 1,000 metres event in a personal best time of 4 mins 15 secs in ideal conditions on Sunday, but it was a different story for the 500 metres race on Saturday. In very blustery conditions she battled back from fifth position at the half-way stage to snatch the gold medal at the post.
Further success came in the K4 class when she teamed up with three other members of the squad to claim the silver medal.
Hereford's other representatives at the meeting, brothers Paul and Mark Burgoyne, both made the finals of the senior 1,000 and 500 metres K1 events respectively, but did not finish in the medal positions. However, they teamed up with two other members of the Great Britain squad to collect a silver medal in the 1,000 metres K4 class, and a bronze medal in the 500 metres event.
During the next month Jenny Spencer will be travelling to Germany twice to represent Great Britain.
The first visit will be as a member of the junior marathon team to compete in a 12-mile K1 event at Dillegan, and two weeks later she will return to compete in a junior sprint event at Bochum.
All this has to be fitted in with her preparations for A levels at Hereford Sixth Form College, together with a busy training schedule.
