JOHN Charles, one of the outstanding footballers of his generation, will be honoured next month with an honorary doctorate from Leeds Metropolitan University.
The former Hereford United player-manager, who found international stardom with Wales and Italian clubs Juventus and Roma, now lives in Leeds where he first came to prominence as a 17-year-old with the United team, switching from defence to centre-forward.
Born in Swansea in 1931, Charles made 38 appearances for Wales and earned the soubriquet 'Gentle Giant' for his sportsmanship.
He joined Southern Leaguers Hereford in 1966 and scored 130 goals in 243 appearances before stepping down in 1971 after forming the core of a squad which went on earn Football League status.
He will receive his doctorate on June 7 and professor Leslie Wagner, vice-chancellor of Leeds Metropolitan University, said: "John Charles has proved an excellent ambassador for sport throughout his life and has a special place in the heart of all Leeds sports fans."
