Kington Town 1
Pegasus Juniors 2 (aet)
PEGASUS retained the Kington Hospital Cup thanks to a superb long-range strike from their skipper Martin Powell in the second period of extra time, giving the Hellenic League side their fourth successive win in the tournament.
Both teams contributed to an excellent final, making light of the difficult conditions to play controlled attractive football.
Kington took a fourth minute lead when a long free kick from the left by Andy Clarke deceived Pegasus goalkeeper Jarrod Clay, who mistimed his attempted clearance punch to deflect the ball into his own net. This gave Kington a boost and they took the game to their higher graded opponents but failed to turn their pressure into goals.
The cup holders came back into the game in the second quarter of the first half and home goalkeeper Dave Alden made an excellent save at the feet of Mark Davis following a surging run by Terry Green and a neat back-heel by Powell.
Kington came out strongly after the break but could not breach the Pegasus defence, with both Robbie Gore and Chris Price failing to convert reasonable scoring chances.
Pegasus gradually took over and when a Daniel Rocke corner kick was not cleared by the home defence, Roy Jordan lashed home the equaliser to take the game into extra time.
Pegasus continued to press, with Kington defending well and looking dangerous on the break.
Eventually the visitor's pressure paid off, with Powell, a former Kington cricketer, finding the target with a thunderous, cup-winning drive.
