Wellington 2 Ledbury Town 1
PETER Wallace fired home a first-half brace as Wellington retained the Banks's Brewery West Midlands Division 1 Cup, holding off a spirited late challenge from their Herefordshire opponents.
Wellington made a bright start and put Ledbury under a lot of early pressure, duly taking the lead after five minutes when Wallace volleyed home from close range.
The standard of play then became disappointing, with only the occasional glimpse of sustained and creative football.
Midway through the half Wellington came to life briefly and extended their lead when Adie Lillwall and Stuart Gwynne combined well for Wallace to head home.
They should have been three up at the break but Kenny Styles blasted wide with the goal at his mercy.
The second half was a drab affair until Ledbury broke away to reduce the arrears and set up an exiting finish. They continued to attack enthusiastically and were only denied an equaliser when Wellington keeper Mick Wells, making only his third appearance of the season, pulled off a magnificent save.
