POSTCARDS - The final stage of Knucklas community project has been completed and postcards of Knucklas viaduct and castle site are now on sale at the Offa's Dike Centre, West Street; The Bookshop, Broad Street; the Clock Tower Tearoom, Knighton; and Upper House and Sunnyside Cottage in Knucklas. The organisers of the project thank Menter Powys for its help in financing this scheme, which has also included the Knucklas castle site walk leaflet, new gates on the walk and a plaque on the site of the castle. They also thank Beth Williams and Will O'Leary for the original photographs for the postcards, the committee, and all members of the community who took part in the project.
ANNUAL MEETING - Knucklas and District Community Centre held its annual meeting, with Christine Martin in the chair. Mrs Martin reviewed a successful year of events and activities organised by the centre, including a float in Knighton Carnival, the annual fun day, a spectacular fireworks display on Guy Fawkes night, Christmas and New Year's parties for the senior citizens and children of the community, and a table sale in Knighton Church Hall. She thanked fellow officers and committee members for their help and support throughout the year. Secretary Kevin Kell said that many projects, started in previous years, had been completed. For the future, Mr Kell warned that the storage annex would need serious attention, and the Powys County Council was pressing ahead with its plans to make all its village halls and community centres, including Knucklas, self-managing trusts. The negotiations involved with this had taken up much of the committee's time, and would continue to do so for the foreseeable future. As a token of thanks for his work on the committee's behalf, vice-chairperson Will O'Leary presented Mr Kell with a stone inscribed with his initial. Treasurer Robert Forbath presented a financial statement, which was accepted by the meeting. Christine Martin was re-elected chairperson, Will O'Leary vice-chairperson, Kevin Kell secretary, Robert Forbath treasurer, and Anne Leighfield bookings secretary. The committee for 2000/2001 was Colin Evans, Lynne Davies, Catherine Leighfield, Eileen Myers, Dr Keith Ackermann, Annette Pike, Stuart Davies, Raymond Davies and Julie Jones. Powys County Council and Beguildy Community Council also appoint committee members, these were Councillors Fred Allen and Ian Johnson. The committee had several events planned for the future, the first of these was a whist drive on Wednesday, June 21, at 8pm. The annual fun day would now be on Saturday, September 16. The Guy Fawkes tide firework display would go ahead, but the date had still to be decided as November 5 was a Sunday this year.
