THE Herefordshire branch of the National Farmers' Union is going all out to help raise cash for hard-pressed farmers.

A traditional barn dance and pig roast is being organised to raise money for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institute which has been carrying out some worthwhile work in Herefordshire.

In fact, during the last year the Institute has paid out the sum of £23,800 in the county.

And mindful of the fact that Herefordshire contributed some £3,300 last year, the county branch of the union wants to raise a significant total for the charitable cause.

The barn dance and pig roast on Saturday, June 3, is being held at Lower House, Canon Frome, Ledbury, the home of the county chairman, Mr Gordon Gilbert.

Mr Gilbert said some forty to fifty farmers in the county had received some financial help.

"The institute can assist people by paying necessities. Of course, they have to pass certain means tests," said Mr Gilbert.

He said the institute helped not only farmers but employees with more than ten years' service. "We are hoping to raise a substantial amount in the county this year and all the proceeds from the barn dance will be going to the RABI," he said.

Last year, cash raised by the county branch was also donated to the Air Ambulance.

So whether connected with farming or not, people are being urged to support this worthy cause.

The barn dance will feature a live band, with dancing from 7.30pm. Food will be available from 7pm.
