THE 1999/2000 season of the Sterling Classic Malvern Football League came to close at the Senior Cup Final on Sunday with The Bull collecting the double for the second year in succession.
The eagerly anticipated final lived up to its expectations in an exciting game that was decided by a flash of inspiration from the League's top goal scorer Robbie Colwell. He spun round to fire e the ball on the volley from 18 yards past Talbot Head keeper Rob Williams on 68 minutes, and Duncan Preedy ran from the halfway line beating the off side trap, to settle the game in the final minute to leave The Bull 2-0 victors.
Talbot Head though will be ruing their chances in the opening 45 minutes as they had the majority of the ball, Tom Hofton had a chance as early as the fifth minute, but his shot failed to trouble Mark Davis in The Bull goal. Talbot head's leading scorer Graham Wright hit the crossbar after 20 minutes and on the half hour Tom Hofton struck the post with his effort. The Bull also had a few opportunities as Williams safely collected Mike Deans' powerful header and Robbie Colwell had an effort which just sailed over the bar towards the end of the half.
In the second period The Bull started o gain more possession and Phil Preedy was controlling the midfield. The Bull introduced Duncan Preedy for the remaining 30 minutes which gave them some more width, and as Talbot head began to tire The Bull were looking ever more likely to break the deadlock. As it happened it left just one opportunity for Colwell as they celebrated their triumph after collecting the League Championship and Senior Cup to round of an excellent season.
Managing Director of League sponsors Sterling Classic, Colin Tyler, presented the winning trophy to The Bull captain Lee Clueitt and the Man of the Match was Tom Hofton of Talbot head.
At the League AGM on Monday, presentations were made to Talbot Head Manager, David Benson, who was the recipient of the inaugural Reg Box Manager of the year Trophy - voted by the clubs. Portobello United were also named winners of the Albert Lyndon Trophy as the most sporting team of the season. During the evening the League confirmed their intention of running one Senior Division and an Under 18s Youth Division next season, to be played on Sunday afternoons.
