POLICE in Bromyard are calling for a by-law to be brought in banning skateboarding in the streets.
At this week's meeting of Bromyard Town Council, PC Richard Shakespeare, one of the town's two beat managers, said he believed a by-law could be enforced once the new skateboard park on the playing fields was completed.
He asked if Herefordshire Council could be pressed to look at the introduction of a by-law.
PC Shakespeare said a ban on skateboarding would considerably cut the number of calls police in Bromyard were having to deal with.
Plans for a skateboard park on the York Road playing fields are back on track thanks to the offer from a local firm to build a skateboard ramp.
The whole project had looked in doubt when the cost of a ramp of sufficient size turned out to be beyond the means of the town council's playing field working party.
But Domestic & Dairy, from the Porthouse Industrial Estate, saved the day when the firm stepped in with an offer of help.
The firm, which makes stainless steel equipment for the refrigeration industry, has offered to build a ramp.
It will build and install the stainless steel ramp at cost, making the whole project possible again.
Edward Daniels, a partner in the firm, is drawing up a plan, which will have to be approved for its safety by ROSPA.
Coun Dorothy Pooley, who chairs the playing field group, said the money saved might enable the council to buy a smaller ramp for younger children to use.
"We are extremely grateful to them for coming forward, it's very public spirited of them," she said.
