LEOMINSTER Junior School singers could be heading for an appearance on national TV after a victory in the first round of the Choir of the Year competition.
The 48 boys and girls, aged between nine and 11, were praised for their 'beautifully disciplined singing' by adjudicator Pamela Cook after seeing off the challenge of six other children's choirs to win the category of Sainsbury's Children's Choir of the day in their heat at Warwick Arts Centre.
The choir now goes forward to the national selection stage in June. From there, just eight choirs in each category are selected for the BBC-televised semi-finals in November and two choirs per category will then make it through to the grand final at the Royal Albert Hall to be broadcast on BBC2 over Christmas 2000.
Choirs are competing for four titles, Children's Choir of the Year, Youth Choir of the Year, Single Voice Choir of the Year and Mixed Voice Choir of the Year. From the category winners, one choir will take the overall title of Sainsbury's Choir of the Year 2000.
A total of £15,000 in prize money is on offer, plus a £1,500 choral commission for the overall winner.
