DARREN Richards (Kington), the Shropshire and Hereford-shire junior captain, underlined his potential when he posted a level par 140 (70,70) to win the twin counties' Invitation Spring Meeting at Llanymynech on Sunday.
Other local players to do well included Alan Williams (Kington) 147 (75,72), Gregg Morgan (Belmont) 148 (72,76), Stewart Franks (Kington) 149 (74,75), Jonathan Devereux (Herefordshire) 151 (78,73), Simon Welsh (Belmont) 155 (79,76) and Jim Payne (Leominster) 158 (80,78).
n Sherry Hughes (Kington) led the qualifiers for the Mid-Wales Ladies' Matchplay Championships with a gross 80 at windswept Aberdovey. She then reached the semi-final before losing one down to former Wales international Ann Hubbard (Borth).
In a county match against Caernarfon and Anglesey, at the same venue, Hughes won both her morning foursomes and afternoon singles.
She retained her form in Kington's Vera Frost Trophy when she fired seven birdies to partner Angela Wilkes to a superb better-ball winning score of nett 58. Results: 1 Angela Wilkes and Sherrie Hughes nett 58, 2 Chris Hughes and Pauline Traylor 64, 3 Jane Burgoyne and Jenny Kelly 64.

Kington seniors beat their Herefordshire GC counterparts 4-2 at home in a friendly.
n Belmont juniors made a good start in the Shropshire and Herefordshire Junior Handicap League when they completed a double over Herefordshire GC, winning the home leg 5- and the away leg 4-1.
The club shared the honours in the senior version of the twin counties handicap League with a 3-3 draw at South Hereford.
Vice-president's Bowl: 1 Ken Matthews and Dave Davies nett 65.6, 2 Russell Pritchard and Peter James 67.2, 3 Neil Jones and Phil Tranter 69.0.
The ladies won their friendly match at the Forest of Dean 3-1.
n Leominster Ladies' captain Jane Hinton and her partner Jane Salter won the Coronation Foursomes with a nett 74, a shot clear of runners-up Pauline Webb and Joan Hunt.
Winter eclectic results: division one, 1 Barbara Perrin 60.5 pts, 2 Geraldine Kelly 63.5; division two, 1 Maisie Legge 66, 2 Yvonne Hopson 68.5.
The ladies team beat Sapey 2- at home in a friendly match.
n Hereford Municipal lady captain Pam Williams held her Captain's Day in glorious conditions, with Sharon Helps posting 109-35-74 to win the cup on a card countback from Lesley Turbutt, 103-29-74. Turbutt took the best gross prize and Sarah Griffiths claimed the longest drive.
Eight couples took part in an inaugural mixed match against Burghill Valley when the honours were shared in a 4-4 draw.
n A superb second round aggregate total of nett 130 earned Dave Boswell and Peter Evans Herefordshire GC's Hereford Times Trophy, a Canada Cup format of the aggregate total of both players over two rounds. Results: 1 Dave Boswell and Peter Evans 272 (142,130), 2 Andrew Barr and Graham Smith 275 (136,139), 3 Graham Slade and Terry Harding 278 (141,137).
The ladies' Gavin Nichol Cup produced a triple tie when Margaret Price, Hilda Rickards and Ann Wallace all posted 36 stableford points. Under the rules of this particular competition they had to play off for the trophy with Wallace coming out on top, followed by Price and then Rickards.
Re-arranged Coronation Cup foursomes: 1 Di Morris and Pam Dudman 95-28-66, 2 Dawn Cooper and Gertie Hayward 93-24-69.
Peter Monk, 73-9-64, won the Herefordshire seniors' Peter Wright Putter competition on a card countback from Danny Wright, 76-12-64, the trophy donor's younger brother. Ian McIntosh claimed third place with 75-9-66, similarly pipping Aubrey Brain, 88-22-66, on a countback.
n A play-off will be required to determine the winner of the Ross-on-Wye Spring Scratch Cup after Brian MacNamara and Jamie Warwick each posted a gross 77.
Ross Webb was a clear winner of the Spring Handicap with 81-16-65, four shots clear of Peter Underwood, 83-14-69.
Gordon Blake Cup: 1 Gerald Ackerman 76-9-67, 1 Richard Nash 80-9-71. Ackerman will now represent the club in the 0-12 section of the Gloucestershire County medal, with Peter Lowe, 87-14-73, competing in the 13-28 section.
Brian and Wilmer MacNamara posted 42 stableford points to win the Douglas Bader mixed qualifier on a countback from Jeff and Jill Oates, with Peter and Judith Landau a point adrift in third place. The event raised £300 for the Bader Foundation.
Ross seniors were soundly beaten 6-2 away in a friendly at Herefordshire.
n Burghill Valley's David Park fired a closing round of 76 for an eight over par total of 296 (75,72, 73, 76) over the testing Brabazon course at the Belfry, for a share of 49th place in the Benson and Hedges International Open.
Burghill Ladies' section mixed open: 1 G Robinson and A Greenfield (Habberly and Kidderminster) 43 pts, 2 Ken and Viv Jury (Belmont) 40, 3 P and R Longley (The Worcestershire) 39, 4 Rita and Paddy Morris (Burghill Valley), 5 N and S Jarman (Cleobury and Worfield) 37. Diana Payne and Ben Lloyd (Herefordshire and Belmont) took the gross prize with 28 points.
