GOOD For A Loan, ridden by Andrew Dalton, was the surprise winner of the Welsh Border Area Confined Championship race at Golden Valley after holding on in a dramatic finish which saw three horses pass the post together, writes Graham Saveker.
The well-fancied Chass-agne was sent off the even money favourite in the 11-runner field but he slipped on the home bend and unseated rider Jo Price with a circuit to go as Good For A Loan set a fast pace from the outset.
As the field closed on the long-time leader, Dalton asked his mount to rally and held on for a half-length success over Gold'N Shroud with Saywhen only a neck away in third place.
Owned by the Ivington-based Edward Layton and Mike Jones, the winner had previously been in training under rules with Richard Lee. A delighted Dalton said of the winner: "I've never sat on him before and it is a surprise that he's run so well." Dalton later took the final division of the Maiden race on Pharpen.
The first and second jockeys in the men's championship were on parade. Leader Les Jefford made the trip up from Devon for a win which kept him seven clear of Eastnor-based Julian Pritchard, who had earlier taken the Men's Open .
Pritchard and Adrian Wintle were joint recipients of the Mark Richards Trophy as joint leading riders at selected meetings.
