Ross Town 1 Swindon Supermarine 2 (aet)
ROSS suffered a cruel defeat in the final of the Cherry Red Records Challenge Cup at Didcot as a goal a minute from the end of extra time snatched the trophy for Swindon Supermarine.
Ex-England under-18 international Peter Farrell put the Hellenic Premier Division side ahead early on when he powerfully headed home a cross from the right wing.
Ross refused to buckle, however, and weathered further Swindon pressure, while James West hit the post for Town with a deflected shot.
And with just six minutes of normal time left, Darren Preece found a deserved equaliser for Ross with an excellent shot from the edge of the box after a fine run from Kevin Jones.
West came closest to breaking the deadlock six minutes into extra time when he turned and shot just over, but, with penalties looming, the game took a final twist.
The biggest game of Town's history ended in heartache when Supermarine broke quickly and Kevin Bailey's cross was deflected into the path of Richard Hadgkiss, who headed in from close range.
l Previously, Ross went down to a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Purton in midweek in Division 1 of the Complete Music Hellenic League, with Town's goal scored by Graham Jones.
