Leominster secured the Hereford Times Herefordshire League Division 1 title with a midweek win over Wooff-erton Reserves.

Steve Evans squandered a penalty but scored the goal for a 1-0 away victory as Leominster got the upper hand in a hard-fought contest.

They followed up the championship triumph with a narrow 5-4 home defeat to nearest rivals Hinton after leading 3-1 and then 4-3.

Hinton went ahead in the first minute when Jason Gillum was dispossessed and 45-year-old stand-in keeper Russell Freeman, who normally manages the Leominster first team, was beaten.

But Leominster soon equalised. After Mark Jones and Steve Evans had shots parried, Mark Nicholas finished from close range.

Nicholas capitalised on a collision between the Hinton keeper and his centre-back after 20 minutes to run on and score and he bagged his hat-trick with a penalty after Evans was brought down.

Five minutes before half-time Hinton came back to 3-2 after the ball was chipped in behind the home defence and they drew level again 10 minutes into the second half with a similar move.

Leominster went back in front within five minutes when Adrian Evans headed in from a rebound after Steve Evans looped a header against the bar.

But with 20 minutes remaining Hinton made it 4-4 with a low shot past Freeman and 10 minutes later clinched victory with a fifth after Adrian Bennett had miskicked.

Leominster capped a successful week by reaching the final of the Presteigne Alfred Sparey Cup with a 4-3 win over Radnor Valley.

An own goal plus scores from Mark Nicholas, Jason Gillum and the winner by Steve Evans saw them through to this Sunday's final.

However, Leominster went out in the semi-finals of HFA Under-18 Giantkillers Youth Cup with a 1-0 home reverse to Pegasus Juniors.

After an equal and goalless first half, Pegasus gained victory in the 86th minute when Paul Bescoby created space for Jamie Rogers to turn and fire in an unstoppable shot.

Kington Colts kept up the pressure at the top of the Herefordshire League Division 2 with a 3-1 midweek triumph at home to Burghill.

Second-placed Painters won 7-1 at home to Bosbury to maintain their challenge but the Colts' weekend showdown with leaders Holme Lacy was postponed.

In Division 3 Tupsley Colts moved closer to making sure of a runners up spot behind champions Orleton with a 6-1 home win over third-placed Shobdon.
