WHEN the curtain comes down on a Bromyard show next week the most relieved person will be teenage theatre impresario Joseph Howlett.

As one of Britain's youngest directors, the 14-year-old has had to overcome a series of obstacles to get his show 'Bus Stop' on stage at the Conquest Theatre.

"Just getting people to turn up to the auditions was a triumph. Next there was a mix-up over rehearsal dates and I found myself in the leaking old public hall," Joseph said.

"People were always dropping out. I was considering dressing up in a skirt and playing one part myself - the show must go on! - but I managed to recruit someone from the Courtyard."

But as he busies himself with last-minute preparations, Joseph is sure that everything will be 'alright on the night'.

The Bishop of Hereford's Bluecoat School pupil has had a love of theatre from the age of six and soon claimed the prize role of the Munchkin Mayor in the Wizard of Oz.

He joined the Youth Theatre aged 11 and flourished in a number of roles before deciding to try his hand at directing.

"Bus Stop is a lively comedy where a variety of characters come together," Joseph explained. "A clash of characters and a superb twist at the end create an enjoyable show."

The Conquest Theatre has been 'delighted' to play host to the pubescent performer, telling him to 'go for it' and supporting him as much as possible.

The farmer's son has interests away from the arts - enjoying public speaking and cycling - but does not watch television and has little idea of who's hot in the business.

And the self-confessed 'luvvie' has no plans to follow in the footsteps of Oscar-winning theatre director Sam Mendes, who recently transferred his success from the West End to Hollywood.

"There are just so many unemployed actors," Joseph said. "I'll probably end up as a lawyer or politician."
