HEREFORDSHIRE gained a notable win in their annual match against the Shropshire and Herefordshire Juniors at Severn Meadows, overturning a 4-2 morning foursomes deficit to record an overall 10-8 victory after winning the afternoon singles 8-4.

County captain John McQuillan (Hereford) led the way when he fired two birdies on the closing holes to edge out promising youngster Simon Welsh (Belmont) by one hole, and Ed Deasey (Kington) went one better when he finished birdie, eagle to beat James Busby (Shifnal) two up.

Eliot Shaw (Burghill Valley) and Neil Crockett (Burghill Valley) made promising debuts with singles victories, and they were backed up with wins from Jim Payne (Leominster), Alan Williams (Kington), Paul Moses (Burghill Valley) and Dave Morris (Kington).

n New pairing Diane Payne and Roy Eckley gained immediate success when they posted 44 stableford points to win the Beaumont Cup, Herefordshire GC's final winter four-ball better-ball mixed foursomes. n Hereford Municipal professional Gary Morgan and former Herefordian Richard Ballard, now a professional at Forest Hills, Coleford, play in the PGA area final of the Glenmuir Club Professional Championship, at Collingtree Park, on May 2.

The top 14 finishers will qualify for the Glenmuir final to be played over the Duke's Course, St Andrews from June 13-16. They will be bidding for a place in the 10-man PGA Great Britain and Ireland Club Professionals Cup team to play the United States at Celtic Manor, Newport in September.
