ANGLING: John Barker came out on top in Hereford Fly Fishing Club's second trip of the season at Llandegffed Reservoir near Pontypool.

Barker had a combined catch of 17lbs and also landed the biggest fish of the day at 4lbs 10oz.

Thirty members took part in the event which saw fish average at nearly 3lbs and a six fish limit imposed.

One member had a larger catch than he expected when he hooked a 7lbs pike that was still holding on to the trout that he had caught.

Results: 1 John Barker 17-0, 2 Geoff Franks 16-10, 3 Ian Peberdy 14-14, 4 Eric Griffiths 12-4, 5 Richard Haines 12-2.

NETBALL: Former England netball players Lucia Sdao and ex-captain Fiona Murtagh return to the county on Saturday and will be on hand to coach the Herefordshire Under-14, 16 and 18 squads.

Murtagh and Sdao, both 1998 Commonwealth Games gold medallists, will take part in a training session at John Masefield School from 10.30am-1.30pm at a cost of £1.

The international duo attended last season's Herefordshire Netball Association presentation evening as guest speakers and are keeping a promise to return to the county.

GYMNASTICS: Young gymnasts Emily Goring and Georgina Dahl fought of stiff opposition to become Grade 6 and Grade 5 champions at the West Midlands Grade Competition in Birmingham.

Goring, seven, and Dahl, 10, were among 20 members of Hereford's Harlequins Club at the event.

They were required to perform set moves on five pieces of apparatus and all achieved a high standard in their grade.

SQUASH: Hereford Whitecross Ladies Squash team completed a successful season with a runners-up spot in Division 2 of the Hereford & Worcester League.

Brenda McDonnell was the top individual in the division after winning all of her 11 matches.

Jan Jones, Marta Norton, Sybil Pront, Rita Rodgers, Annie Vernon, Bev Whiting and Rita Wilson completed the team.
