WESTFIELDS' 19th century village hall has been replaced with a new community centre.

The old wood and tin hall in Highmore Street was demolished last May to make room for a smart new building costing more than £200,000.

The new community centre will provide a venue for the Chandos Street Playgroup and community events.

It is also licensed for marriage services and provides a 'church' venue for the Christian religious group, The Circle of Light. Group services will resume every Sunday evening from April 30 at 6.30pm.

The old hall, thought to have been built circa 1885, had been used as military quarters and a station for prisoners of war. It also provided a venue for Sunday school and family meetings.

The community centre will be officially opened by Paul Keetch MP on Saturday, May 6 at 2pm. The open day will provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and interested members of the community to look at the new facilities. Improvements include a large hall which would seat about 250 people.

A lottery grant provided 90 per cent of funds for the building. Herefordshire Council also made a donation.
