A HEREFORD author has re-released a bewitching tale of seafaring courage and profound love for God - and it's all about his 'Great Uncle Alfred'.

Dr Alfred White used a keen fascination with his distant relative to trawl through hundreds of diary entries and letters while compiling the book.

Alfred Charlesworth died when he was just 24, but not before leaving behind an astonishing life story.

He was a God-fearing man who headed for New Zealand in 1875 in order to improve his health.

Sadly, after enjoying his adventures there, he grew steadily more ill and failed to survive the return journey home.

The book paints a picture of a remarkable Methodist man who retained his integrity and humour in spite of being struck down tragically by illness.

Great Uncle Alfred, by Alfred Emmet White, is published by the Self Publishing Association at £14.95. For copies telephone Dr White on 01432 840252.
