Police are out to prove they want to help people at both ends of the age scale in Herefordshire.

West Mercia Police are following up a "Crucial Crew" initiative aimed at teenagers with "Senior Safety" - intended to help the over-60s.

This time, the emphasis will not be on issues such as bullying and drug abuse but topics including dealing with bogus callers, distraction burglaries and safety in the home.

As well as the police, representatives from the Benefits Agency, fire and ambulance will also be on hand at Woolhope Village Hall.

"Senior safety is about helping older people living in the community to help themselves," said Community Support Officer Alison Dore.

"We want to reduce the number of bogus callers and distraction burglaries in the county.

"This is a problem Herefordshire is plagued with during the summer months."

Police say elderly people are particularly vulnerable to these types of crimes and awareness of how to combat these problems will be raised by a role play exercise.

The sessions are planned to be hands-on and enjoyable rather than simply "sit down and listen" sessions.

"By mocking up a scenario, we hope to show those attending how easy it is to become a victim," added CSO Dore.

The sessions are aimed at people over 60 from the Woolhope, Putley and Much Marcle area.

Sessions will be free of charge and held in the morning and afternoon of Thursday, July 28.

Places can be booked by calling Les Gordon or Ruth Whitting on 01432 860287 or Alison Dore on 08457 444888.
