A RURAL community has been horrified and angered after a cat was shot through the neck with a crossbow.
Ruth Morris was preparing breakfast at home in Stuccles, Orleton, last Thursday when she heard a "terrific clattering" at the cat flap.
She was horrified to find out why her four-year-old tabby Puccini was having a problem getting in to the house.
A steel arrow of more than a foot long was lodged through his neck.
He needed an emergency operation.
Resident Mrs Morris, who is a grandmother, said she was stunned and frightened by the incident and is appealing to villagers to pass on information to the Police.
"Just who is going around here firing a crossbow? It's a killing weapon and could harm people just as much as pets," she said
"Puccini was nearly killed - the arrow was close to his jugular vein.
"I am worried children playing in gardens could be at risk."
Puccini - known as Pucci by the family - is normally the most handsome of tabbies but as he recovers from his operation and the effects of anaesthetic, he is looking "pathetic" says his owner.
His fur has been falling out because of shock.
He is being pampered with special food and house rules about no-go areas have been relaxed.
"He's an outdoor hunting type of cat but he's also very much a family pet," said Mrs Morris. "I am so relieved that he is pulling through."
The crossbow bolt which had a red shaft and a red and yellow flight similar to a darts flight has been handed to the police.
Police spokeswoman Georgie Bates said: "This was an horrendous incident.
"We are appealing to local people to contact us if they have seen anyone using or carrying a crossbow in the Orleton area."
The officer dealing with the incident is PC Trudi Qualter on 08457 444888.
