A guitarist fears his playing days could be over after he was attacked without provocation outside Hereford Cathedral.
A nerve was severed and Ben Parker has lost the feeling in two of his fingers after his left arm was sliced open by a shard of flying glass last Saturday, at 9pm.
The 24-year-old, who returned home to Hereford on Tuesday after an operation in Birmingham, said he still had no idea why he and his friends were the target of a drunken mob.
"We had all just finished band practice and as we were walking across the Castle Green three drunk men started to follow us and shout abuse," he said.
"We tried to stay out of their way but, when we got near the Cathedral, they lobbed a beer bottle at us.
"It smashed on the floor and a shard of glass flew up into my arm."
Mr Parker held his arm in the air while his friends tied clothing around the wound before paramedics arrived.
He was taken to Hereford County Hospital and then to Selly Oak Hospital but the damage was done and Mr Parker is worried about his career prospects.
"I am a care worker at Scope so I won't be able to work there for a while as I do a lot of heavy lifting," he said.
"I will also be unable to play the guitar with my band, which is a real shame as I have only just joined and we had a lot planned."
Mr Parker said it was now a question of time to see if he could regain feeling in his two fingers.
Anyone with information on the three attackers is asked to contact Hereford Police on 08457 444888.
