A DELIGHTED Gwyn Morgan captured the Herefordshire Seniors Championship that had eluded him in a play-off four years ago when he carded a superb gross 71 at Herefordshire GC.
Aptly, the Ross-on-Wye golfer was playing with home club member Neil Bell, the man who beat him in the four-hole medal play-off at Kington in 2001.
This time Morgan gave an inspired display of putting to finish five shots clear of Bell to keep the trophy at Ross, the home club of last year's winner Brian McNamara.
The third member of the group, Kington's Ron Pritchard, pushed Morgan all the way and claimed runners-up spot with a three-over-par 73.
Herefordshire collected the team prize with Bell, 76, Keith Williams, 74, and Cliff Mawby, 76, carding a winning total of 226.
Herefordshire GC's former secretary Cyril Jones was awarded a special prize for his continued long support of the event. Jones, at a sprightly 86 years, was the oldest competitor in the field.
Results, Herefordshire Seniors Championship: 1 Gwyn Morgan (Ross) 71, 2 Rob Pritchard (Kington) 73, 3 Keith Williams (Herefordshire) 74.
Nett competition, (55-64 years): 1 Brian Vaughan (Burghill Valley) 82-17-65, 2 Chris Harvey (Ross) 80-12-68, 3 Dave Evans (Herefordshire) 82-14-68; (65-plus years): 1 Geoff Gobey (Herefordshire) 78-12-66, 2 John Tyler (Burghill Valley) 81-14-67, 3 Nigel Yarwood (Herefordshire) 88-20-68.
