ORGANISERS of the Herefordshire County Fair are celebrating the most successful event for many years.

More than 6,000 people poured into the fair at its new location at Castle Meadows, Sellack, near Ross-on-Wye.

"This was the best for many years and if there was a problem then it was that we were a victim of our own success," said show secretary David Probert.

"Because of the number of people there was a lot of queuing which is something we need to look at next year but in a way it was a good problem to have. The new venue was tremendous and made a major contribution to the success of the event.

"It has been a very difficult few years since the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 that came close to ending the fair. Since then we have been building up the numbers and this year has been a real breakthrough."

The 26th Herefordshire Country Fair had many attractions, including a performance by the Solent Eagles Stunt Motorcycle Display Team.

Animals were high on the list of other attractions with a programme of show jumping, terrier and lurcher racing as well as dog agility. There was also a falconry display and a chance for visitors to watch angling experts in action and try their hand at fishing.

Visitors had the chance to sample country life at first hand, there were more than 150 trade stands and motor enthusiasts also had the opportunity to view a display of vintage cars.
