VOLUNTARY groups across Herefordshire are being reminded they can benefit from hundreds of pounds in funding under a scheme aimed at improving communities.

Grants of up to £600 are available for community groups under the Market Towns' Initiative Community Pride Schemes, run by Herefordshire Council.

The funding covers Bromyard, Leominster, Kington and Ross-on-Wye and their surrounding parishes.

Groups to benefit under the scheme so far include the Yarpole Community Shop, near Leominster, where volunteers who run the post office and shop received funds for a new freezer, a contribution towards the insurance for Brilley Festival, near Kington, and Bromyard Rugby Club, where money was used to help train 10 new coaches for the junior rugby team.

"The grants are very useful and help support community groups," said Councillor Charles Mayson, cabinet member for rural regeneration.

"Under the scheme Kington and Bromyard funding will dry up at the end of March 2006, so this is the last chance for groups to submit their applications."

Voluntary groups or organisations must have a written constitution to apply.
