ROSE Johnson, from Lower Eggleton, near Ledbury, finally got the chance to improve her position at the Women's World Gliding Championships after being frustrated by bad weather for most of the last week.

The conditions at Klix in Eastern Germany relented sufficiently to allow a short race before the championships ended.

Unfortunately, Johnson just failed to complete the 154km race, landing out just 2km short of the finish line. Her resulting 15th place meant that she also finished the championship in overall 15th, after being second during the early stages.

Johnson's partner in the Club Class, Liz Bertoya-Sparrow, had to abandon her race after only 12km when she became unwell. Bertoya-Sparrow finished the championship in 16th position.

It was not all disappointment for the British team, however. Gill Spreckley and Sarah Kelman took silver and bronze in the Standard Class.

Final Overall Positions: 1 Hana Vokrinkova (CZE, Standard Cirrus) 3577 pts, 2 Swaantje Geyer (GER, LS1f) 3556, 3 Marina Kalaeva (RUS, Standard Jantar) 3390, 15 Rose Johnson (GBR, ASW19) 2784, 16 Liz Bertoya-Sparrow (GBR, Pegase) 2647.
