NASTY niffs galore were created at a children's workshop in Bromyard.

The children were given a smell from Tudor England at Smelly Pigs, an activity morning organised by Herefordshire County Council's Heritage Services.

There was an opportunity to sniff a selection of special smell boxes containing the aromas people in Tudor times would have smelt every time they walked down the street. They included everything from horse manure and rotting vegetables to the contents of chamber pots.

There was also a chance to make a pig-shaped nosegay, filled with fresh mint and rosemary and look at artefacts like leather bottles.

"The children really enjoyed making their smelly pigs," said Lara Latcham, for Heritage Services, adding that they had found the typical smells of a Tudor street very unpleasant.

"They really didn't want to smell the bad smells. We all live in such a sanitised, hygienic environment these days," she said.

The workshop was held at Bromyard Heritage Centre.
