Parking in Ledbury town centre will be cut back under a traffic order proposed by Herefordshire Council.

Sections of parking along High Street will be removed and motorists will be unable to park next to the Market House on Tuesdays and Saturdays, while the market is running.

The bus stop will be lengthened and sections of parking on the Homend will be designated for resident permit-holders only.

However, town councillor Keith Francis said: "Parking in Ledbury is a problem, if visitors come here and find nowhere to park, they'll go home."

Fellow councillor Tony Bradford said: "This will just move cars further out into residential areas on the outskirts. We need more parking facilities, not less."

Homend resident Adrian Harness believes that valuable daytime spaces for visitors and shoppers will be lost if residents are allowed to park vehicles permanently.

Andrew Jenkins, of Here-fordshire Council, said proposals were created following requests and comments from people in the town.

Also included are plans to increase waiting times along sections of High Street from 45 minutes to an hour, introducing bicycle and motorbike parking areas and moving the disabled parking bay away from the traffic lights.

The issue was due to be discussed by the town council last night (Thursday).

Written objections should be sent to Marie Rosenthal, Brockington, 35 Hafod Road, Hereford, HR1 1SH, before September 5.
