AS A member of the Tanzania Committee for some 14 years, I write with reference to the article on the Diocesan Links in Tanzania - Forging Friendships (Hereford Times, August 13).

The link was not forged after the installation of the present Bishop as indicated in the article. This is no new initiative; Bishop Eastaugh started the link and it has grown from strength to strength.

Dean Robert Willis strengthened the links further in 1993 by visiting Tanzania several times. Since then, deaneries and parishes in the diocese have financially sponsored students at St Mark's theological college (no mean feat when parishes are desperately trying to raise their annual quotas).

The cathedral itself has been host to many visitors from Tanzania who have stayed at the deanery and worked at the cathedral for months at a time.

There is also the strong and well known link with Tengeru run by a committee in Leominster.

I would not want those who have given so generously of their time and money since the beginning to feel that their support has not been appreciated.

DOROTHY THIRTLE,

Wellington.
