BELMONT won the Shropshire & Herefordshire Junior Handicap League championship when they beat Llanymynech in a dramatic final at Patshull Park.

A closely-fought match ended with the six singles matches shared at 3-3 and the title had to be decided on a countback on holes up, which went in favour of Belmont by the narrowest possible margin - one up.

Winners for Belmont were Pete James, who beat Wales international Mark Trow, Daniel Morris and James Pritchard, while their gallant losers were Ryan Jones, Alex Phillips and Luke Morris.

Belmont will now go through to represent the twin counties in the National County Junior Finals at Woodhall Spa in late September.

n Four promising Herefordshire youngsters helped the Shropshire & Herefordshire team to a crushing 11-3 win over a much-fancied Worcestershire in a Midlands Junior League match at Burghill Valley.

This was an important result for the twin counties and a good win over Derbyshire in their final match on Sunday could see the youngsters lift the coveted Midlands title.

Matt Davies (Kington) and Kris Jones (Burghill Valley) won both their morning foursomes and afternoon singles, while Peter James (Belmont) won his foursomes and halved his singles and Sam Baker (Burghill Valley) won his foursomes but went down in the singles on the final hole.
