FORMER world indoor bowls champion Rob Weale added another title to his impressive list by carrying off the Welsh Singles Championship at Llandrindod Wells.

Weale, aged 42, representing his home town club Presteigne, defeated N Rees, of Parc-y-Dre, 21-19 in the final after seeing off the challenge of M Wyatt (Caerphilly Town) 21-9 in the last four.

In the first round, Weale defeated D Prosser (Nixons) 21-3, moving on to a quarter-final against C Williams (Gilfach), whom he beat 21-18.

The win ensured his entry into the British Isles championships at Clevedon next July when he will have the chance to test his mettle against the national winners from England, Wales, Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey.

The only disappointment of the week for Weale was a defeat in the last 16 of the fours where he has been part of a winning quartet in three of the last four years.

For Weale, it is a second singles win following on from success in 2000 and he hopes that maybe it will a foretaste of things to come.

"Last time I won the Welsh Singles title I went on to win the World Indoor title so perhaps it's a good omen," he said.

n Herefordshire involvement in the triples and pairs at the National Express English Champ-ionships in Worthing came to a disappointingly rapid end.

The triple of Pat Merredy, Gerald Jones and Roy Bennett bowed out at the preliminary round stage when they went down 23-16 to Devon B.

Alec Carter and Alan Hardy, who represented Herefordshire in the pairs, were beaten 36-3 in the first round by the Warwickshire A pairing S Gilbert and A Smith, of Avenue Leamington.
