SATURDAY was championship day at Shelsley Walsh centenary meeting and the Nicholson McLaren British series leader, Martin Groves, thrilled the crowds with an outright record-breaking run of 23.77 seconds in his Gould GR55B NME.

Scott Moran was the leading county driver with a time of 24.59 which helped move him up to fifth in the British Championship.

Sue Young, from Yarkhill, stopped the clocks at 26.94 to re-set her ladies' record for the 1,000 yards Worcestershire climb.

The morning run-off was won by Groves, followed by the Orleton father-and-son duo, Roger and Scott Moran, in their Gould GR61X. Scott raced to second spot on 24.76 and Roger was third with 24.84. Deryk Young drove the family Gould GR51 to sixth with 25.09.

Scott Moran took fourth in the afternoon session with his 24.75 shot and Roger was fifth on 24.75.

Leominster driver Pete Bishop won the 2000cc modified production sports car class with a time of 31.95 seconds in his Westfield.
