BURGHILL & Tillington remain hot on the heels of Division 1 leaders Monmouth after an impressive demolition of Wormelow in their penultimate Flint & Cook Marches League fixture.

Wormelow won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first in overcast conditions but the decision failed to pay dividends as skipper Clive Chadhani and Tim Walsh (32) posted 82 for the first wicket.

Nick Phelps (29) then joined Chadhani who benefited from two dropped catches to reach his second century of the season, scoring 108 with 14 fours and a six.

Kingsley Morris (53 not out) and Mark Preece (21 not out) ensured a late flourish as Burghill closed on 259-4.

Acting skipper Shaun Waldron (55) got the Wormelow reply off to a rapid start but only Derek Porter (23) was able to add much further resistance in the face of some good bowling from Morris (4-13), Phelps (2-38) and Chadhani (2-42).

Burghill eventually won by 101 runs to maintain their unbeaten away record but they must beat Canon Frome and hope that Talgarth can overcome Monmouth on Saturday if they are to claim the title.

Outsiders Talgarth could still snatch the title but only in the event of a comprehensive win by Canon Frome and a 20-0 points verdict in their favour against Monmouth.

The Monmouth v Talgarth fixture will take place at Llanarth due to the unavailability of Monmouth's ground.

Canon Frome warmed up for their potentially decisive clash with Burghill by hammering Llandrindod Wells by 71 runs.

Chris Styles (66) and Rob Mence (75) compiled a century opening stand but the real fireworks came in the last six overs which produced 81 runs. Jon Williams lashed seven sixes in his 55 while the unfortunate John Davies conceded 64 from his four overs.

N Mills (54) and Martin Hurst (49) played well for the visitors but wickets fell at regular intervals and they were eventually dismissed for 219. Styles completed a good all-round match by returning 3-64 with Seth Marshall who took four catches to add to his 2-47, Neil Andrews (2-30) and Rhod Mence (2-5) giving useful support.

In a middle-of-the-table clash, Garnons and Goodrich produced 475 runs in a 42-over match won by Garnons by 33 runs.

Jon Andrews cracked 10 fours and a six in his 75 while Andy Brace lashed four sixes and five fours in a quickfire 65 as Garnons rattled up 254-7.

Skipper Andy Brown cracked 64 for the villagers but their innings closed at 221 in the 38th over.

Talgarth's clash with Glangrwyney fell victim to the weather.
