MOST of the boys shot scores not far above their handicaps - suggesting that slow play could be eradicated from the game - when Kington Juniors successfully contested the first speed golf challenge at Bradnor Hill.

The winner, Nick Crum, shot a gross 78, just over his nine handicap, playing the round off the whites in 63 minutes while covering a distance of over three-and-half miles in all.

Speed golf is decided on strokes added to the minutes taken to complete the round and Crum's 78 in 63 minutes resulted in a score of 141, beating club professional Andy Gealy, who joined the boys on the early-morning venture, by seven.

The sponsored event raised over £500 for junior funds and club steward John Barnett, who correctly guessed the winning total, generously donated his £50 prize to the cause.
